I am still in a stage of my life where my friends are growing exponentially in all different directions. They are relocating for new job opportunities, starting families, going back to school and discovering new creative and technical paths. I am ecstatic for them because I definitely brag about the incredible people in my life (proud Auntie™ energy, amirite) BUT! this means that I don't get to spend as much face-to-face time with them. It means I can't go to their houses, make popcorn and simply watch bad movies on their couch and chat sh*t about nothing and everything.
Now, I love movies. I'm totally enamored with the artistry of film making (large scale, amateur, all of it). One of the things that I like most about movies is the impact that they can have. The art of storytelling is not new, in fact, it is one of the original ways that humans connected to their ancestors and culture. With the technology we have at out fingertips, we now have this incredible amount of access to so many different stories and perspectives. It's hard for me to not to get lost in the wonder of someone's life that has been carefully and beautifully depicted on screen.
So I miss my friends + I love movies and how they bring people together.. It's mathematics at this point, no?
This summer, I will be bringing my friends together to watch movies (short, long, serious, silly, classic and brand new) that were created Black people and center Black people, because, why not? I will send them the movie of the month and at the end of the month, we will discuss the movie virtually. Even though I originally thought this up because I missed my close friends, E's Black Movie Club is open to everyone who loves movies and Black people and want to be apart of the conversation. All love.
